Class and Gym Etiquette at Knowledge of Self

To ensure a respectful, safe, and productive training environment, we ask all students to follow these guidelines:

   •    Approach every class with humility and respect for others. Leave egos at the door.
   •    Arrive on time or early to prepare for class and maximize your learning.
   •    Always sign in before class begins.
   •    Request permission from instructors before stepping on or leaving the mats.
   •    Bow to the center of the mats when entering or exiting to show respect.
   •    Keep the mats clean by removing your shoes before stepping onto them and wearing shoes in all off-mat areas.
   •    Maintain silence and focus while the instructor is teaching; avoid disruptions.
   •    Practice good hygiene: bathe regularly, use deodorant, and keep nails trimmed.
   •    Wear a clean, appropriate uniform and a rash guard underneath your gi. Wash your training gear after every session.
   •    Remove all jewelry before class to ensure safety for yourself and your partners.
   •    Respect higher-ranked students by giving them space during training.
   •    Address black belt instructors as “Professor” and other instructors as “Coach.”

Training Safety and Conduct

   •    Stay mindful of your surroundings to maintain a safe training space.
   •    Tap out early and often—training is about learning, not competition.
   •    Cover any open cuts to prevent health risks.
   •    Show courtesy and care to your training partners at all times.
   •    Use a mouthguard to protect your teeth during sparring.
   •    If you’re feeling sick, stay home to protect others.

Parental and Facility Guidelines

   •    Parents are responsible for their children’s behavior when not in class.
   •    Treat the facility with respect by cleaning up after yourself.
   •    Avoid coaching from the sidelines; allow instructors to guide the class.

The Philosophy of Training

   •    The skills you learn are tools for personal growth and self-defense, to be used only when absolutely necessary.
   •    Respect your instructors and training partners—rank represents knowledge, experience, and dedication.

By following these guidelines, we create a positive and safe environment where everyone can learn and grow. Thank you for respecting the values of Knowledge of Self!
