What is Knowledge of Self?
Knowledge of Self is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school opening in Brookshire, Texas, in Spring 2025. We focus on personal growth, physical fitness, and self-defense, offering programs for children, teens, and adults. Our motto—Strength, Clarity, Perseverance—reflects our commitment to developing both mind and body.
What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport specializing in grappling and ground techniques. It teaches students how to use leverage and strategy to defend against opponents, making it effective for self-defense and personal development.
Do I need experience to join?
No experience is required! We welcome beginners and advanced practitioners. Our structured classes ensure everyone progresses at their own pace.
When will classes start?
Classes will begin following our grand opening in Spring 2025. Stay tuned for updates on schedules and registration.
How often can I attend class?
You will have unlimited classes! Come as often as you would like.
What age groups do you serve?
We offer programs for:
• Kids (ages 6-11): A fun, engaging program teaching respect, discipline, and self-defense.
• Teens & Adults (ages 12+): A comprehensive program focused on fitness, self-defense, and advanced techniques.
What should I wear to my first class?
For your first class, wear comfortable workout attire, such as a t-shirt and shorts without zippers. Gi uniforms will be available for purchase or rental.
What should I expect during my Trial Class?
After completing your paperwork, including a waiver, you will be introduced to the instructor. After everyone is greeted class will begin. You will warm up with the group, learn some moves, and complete some other jiu jitsu skills. Class for children is 45 minutes and adult classes are 1 hour.
What are the benefits of training at Knowledge of Self?
Our students gain physical fitness, mental clarity, and practical self-defense skills. Training also fosters discipline, confidence, and camaraderie within a supportive community.
How often should I train?
We recommend training 2-3 times per week for beginners. Advanced practitioners can adjust frequency based on their goals and experience.
Is BJJ safe for kids?
Yes! Our kids’ program focuses on teaching techniques safely and respectfully while keeping the classes engaging and fun. Instructors prioritize each child’s development and well-being.
How do I sign up?
You can register online or in person during our grand opening event. Early enrollment specials will be announced—don’t miss out!
Do I have to buy your academy gi?
No. We do have academy gi's for sale but you are welcome to wear any gi as long as it meets IBJJF standards.

Do you allow drop-ins?
We do. A visitor day pass is $20.
What are your membership terms?

Our memberships are month-to-month. You can freeze your account for a month if you will be unavailable/out of town. If you do need to cancel your membership, we will need a 60-day notice.
